National Burrito Day falls on Thursday, April 3. Chains and neighborhood taquerías slash prices to draw lunchtime and dinner crowds.

Restaurants from San Diego to Portland post one day specials on foil wrapped cylinders of rice, beans, meat along with salsa. The dish, first served in Ciudad Juárez during the 1940s, now appears on menus in strip mall taquerías, airport kiosks in addition to drive-through lanes.

Moe’s Southwest Grill grants rewards members a second burrito or bowl at no cost when they purchase the first. Members who open the brand’s phone application enter a drawing for fifty two weekly burrito vouchers. El Pollo Loco revives the “Burrito Vault,” an online word puzzle. Players who finish the grid receive a buy-one-get-one code – a handful win free burritos for a year. Loco Rewards subscribers also receive complimentary delivery on orders placed through the company site.

Yesway, a Texas convenience store chain, sells a sixteen ounce fountain drink and a refrigerated burrito for $1.99 to rewards members.

Beer arrives on April 7, National Beer Day. Until then, diners pair burritos with horchata, agua fresca, or cola.
